Choose the Best Referee

Many people think that a recruitment agency will be the be-all and end-all of your job search. This is not the case. At the end of the day, it is up to YOU and the actions you take that decide whether you will end up securing the right job.

One of the most important steps in the recruitment process is providing the agency or potential employer with your referee details. Companies like South West Recruitment can only take you so far in the job process; the reference is up to you.

When you apply for a job, an amazing reference will give you the edge to help you over the line and into the position. The key is to use a referee who can make you sound good and reaffirm the things you talk about in the interview. A reference is equally as important when going for different types of employment, either temporary, permanent or contract. It will help you to get the job especially if there is a lot of competition for the position.

A referee should talk about the work ethic you display, your work style and the skills you have displayed. In an ideal situation, the referee should be somebody you’ve worked with for a long time and who would employ you again without thinking twice.

When selecting a referee, you should select someone that is familiar with the position or role you are applying for. In general, an unsuitable referee would be someone that has not worked in the industry or position you’re applying for. They are also unsuited to be your referee if they are a friend or are not in a position to be able to match your skills to the job you are going for.

Choosing an unsuitable referee is a common fault with many job seekers. When choosing your referee, choose someone that is work-related. It could be a boss from the past or superior, but preferably not a current colleague. Before asking somebody to be your referee, you must be sure they will write your referral to present you in a good way.

Make sure you ask the person to be your referee instead of assuming they will say yes, as it’s stunning the amount of times a referee has been called without the knowledge that they were being used as a referee. If this happens it will not look good for you and it makes things uncomfortable for the recruiter and referee. If you are pretty sure your referee will be called about you then give him as much information about the job and company as is possible. This includes the title, role and job description. Also, try and refresh their memory about your skills and achievements during your time with him or her.
